CYFIRMA has released the Deepfake and information warfare report focusing on Indian elections 2024. The report highlights active campaigns, deployment of deepfake in the past to influence state elections of Karnataka, Delhi and Telangana, and remedial steps that Govt of India can undertake to ensure free and fair elections. According to the report, the upcoming 2024 Indian election may witness rising threat of Generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) & deepfake driven propaganda, disinformation campaigns, as well as a surge in cyber-attacks by hacktivists. The surge in deepfake usage in Indian politics peaked around November 2023, coinciding with the Karnataka State elections. In Telangana and Delhi State elections, misinformation and Deepfake campaign videos were released, going viral just before polling day. A surge in data breaches affecting Indian citizens’ personal identifiable information has enabled threat actors to carry out targeted deepfake campaigns.
